State Funeral Announced for Former Bangladeshi PM Khaleda Zia Amid Nationwide Mourning

Bangladesh is observing three days of state mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died at the age of 80 on Tuesday morning. Her funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.

In a televised address, Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus appealed to citizens for calm and unity during this period of grief. “I humbly appeal to everyone to maintain discipline while observing all forms of mourning, including the funeral prayers. I know you are all deeply emotional at this time,” Yunus said. “I hope that during this difficult period, you will show utmost patience and support one another in carrying out her last rites.”

Asif Nazrul, the interim government’s law minister, confirmed that the funeral prayers will take place in front of the parliament after midday prayers, followed by burial alongside her late husband, Ziaur Rahman.

Bangladesh, home to 170 million people, has faced political turbulence since a student-led revolt in August 2024 overthrew Sheikh Hasina, ending her 15-year rule. Despite years of ill health and imprisonment, Zia had pledged in November to campaign for her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the upcoming February 2026 elections.

The BNP remains a leading political force, with Zia’s son Tarique Rahman, who recently returned after 17 years in exile, emerging as a potential prime ministerial candidate should the party secure a majority.

As the nation pauses to mourn, citizens remember Khaleda Zia not just as a political figure, but as a resilient leader who shaped Bangladesh’s modern history. Her legacy will be remembered with respect, reflection, and unity during these solemn days.
