Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has given the green light to two crucial initiatives designed to improve environmental sustainability and preserve the region’s rich cultural legacy.

In a significant move, the Chief Minister approved a Used Water Management Project, which includes the establishment of a ₹19.99 crore sewage treatment plant in Ganderbal town, central Kashmir. This initiative aims to ensure the proper treatment of wastewater, keeping rivers clean, improving public health, and elevating sanitation standards across communities.

“The project reflects a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and public well-being,” the Office of the Chief Minister, J&K, announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the Chief Minister’s Scheme for Heritage Courses, under the Skill Development Department. This program is set to revive seven traditional craft courses across 25 training units in government ITIs and polytechnics, with an intake capacity of 500 students. The plan also includes stipends for trainees and honorariums for instructors, ensuring that skill-building is both accessible and rewarding.

“This step will not only preserve our traditional art forms but also empower youth through skill-based livelihoods,” a government spokesperson highlighted.

These decisions reflect the government’s broader vision — combining modern development with the revival of cultural roots. They represent a future where progress and preservation move hand in hand, ensuring that every drop of water and every craft tradition contributes to a sustainable and self-reliant Jammu & Kashmir.
