China says US is misrepresenting its defence policy to slow progress in China-India relations

China has accused the United States of twisting the intent behind its defence policies in order to complicate warming relations between Beijing and New Delhi.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks during a regular press briefing when asked whether China might use the recent easing of tensions with India over disputed border regions as leverage to slow cooperation between the US and India.

Lin said China approaches its relationship with India from a “strategic and long-term perspective,” stressing that the border situation is an issue solely between the two neighbouring countries. He added that China opposes external parties making judgments or interfering in matters related to the border.

His comments followed a Pentagon report released Tuesday, which stated that China “probably seeks to capitalise on decreased tension… to stabilise bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of US-India ties.”

While diplomatic language often feels distant, at the heart of this story are two of the world’s largest nations navigating history, pride and security — and a global community watching closely. Understanding, rather than escalation, remains the hope shared by people everywhere.
