Lebanon has declared a national day of mourning following a devastating wave of Israeli airstrikes that killed nearly 200 people, casting serious doubt over an already fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
The strikes, described as some of the most intense in recent months, hit multiple areas across the country, leaving at least 182 people dead and close to 900 injured, according to Lebanon’s health authorities. The scale of the destruction has sent shockwaves through the region and raised urgent questions about whether diplomacy can still hold.
Just days earlier, Washington and Tehran had both signaled progress after agreeing to a temporary two-week truce, aimed at cooling tensions and opening the door to broader peace talks. US Vice President JD Vance reiterated that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, stating that any disruption to negotiations over this issue would ultimately fall on Iran. On the other hand, Iranian officials warned that continued attacks undermine the very foundation of ongoing diplomatic efforts, signaling that talks could collapse if the situation persists.
On the ground, the human toll is overwhelming.
Residents in Beirut described scenes of chaos and fear as explosions struck without warning. Families fled through smoke-filled streets, unsure where safety could be found. What was once daily life has quickly turned into survival.
International observers have also expressed alarm. The scale of casualties and destruction has been described as deeply troubling, with calls for restraint growing louder across the global community.
Adding to the uncertainty, disagreements over key terms of the ceasefire — including Iran’s conditions and regional security concerns — continue to complicate negotiations.
