Malaysia Braces for Rare Tropical Storm ‘Senyar’: Updated Warnings as Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Flood Risks Loom

Malaysia is on high alert as tropical storm Senyar, a rare system for the region, edges closer to the country’s western coastline. Detected north of Sumatra and currently located roughly 102 kilometres southwest of Lumut, Perak, the storm continues its southeastward journey through the Straits of Malacca at an estimated 24 km/h.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the storm’s trajectory could trigger widespread heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and dangerous sea conditions, particularly across the western and central states of Peninsular Malaysia from today until Saturday.

MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that multiple key warnings have now been updated and activated, including the Tropical Storm Warning, Continuous Rainfall Warning, and Strong Wind and Rough Sea Warning. These warnings affect Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor, and are effective from November 27 to 29.

He added that the agency will maintain round-the-clock monitoring and issue further updates as conditions evolve.

A severe-level continuous rainfall warning, expected to last until Saturday, has been issued for:

  • Kedah (Kulim, Bandar Baharu)
  • Penang
  • Perak
  • Terengganu
  • Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Bentong)
  • Selangor
  • Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya

Meanwhile, an alert-level rainfall warning covers:

  • Kelantan
  • Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan, Rompin)
  • Negeri Sembilan
  • Melaka
  • Johor (Tangkak, Segamat)
