New Zealand and Slovakia have temporarily closed their embassies in Tehran and evacuated their diplomatic staff as security conditions in Iran continue to deteriorate.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that its diplomats departed Iran safely on commercial flights overnight. For now, all embassy operations have been relocated to Ankara, Turkey, where officials will continue monitoring the situation.

Slovakia took a similar step, citing a “significant” decline in security and the growing risk of military escalation in the region. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar assured the public that all embassy personnel were safely out of Iran and no longer in danger.

In response to the worsening situation, New Zealand has issued its strongest travel advisory, warning citizens not to travel to Iran under any circumstances. Those currently in the country have been urged to leave immediately, as the government’s ability to provide consular assistance is now extremely limited.

Officials also advised New Zealanders in Iran to contact family members whenever possible, noting that communication networks have been severely disrupted, making it difficult for people to reach loved ones.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters expressed deep concern over Iran’s violent response to widespread anti-government protests. He condemned the use of force against demonstrators, calling it a “brutal crackdown” that violates basic human rights.

Peters reaffirmed that Iranians have the right to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and access to information—rights that are currently being suppressed. New Zealand has formally raised these concerns with Iran’s embassy in Wellington and said it will continue diplomatic pressure.
