Indian authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into a deadly explosion that shook the nation’s capital near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort. The powerful car blast, which tore through the crowded area on Monday evening, killed at least eight people and left 20 others injured.
The incident marks the first major attack of this kind in the city since 2011, prompting swift condemnation and a firm response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Bhutan at the time for an official visit.
“Today, I have come to Bhutan with a very heavy heart,” Modi said in Thimphu. “The horrific incident that happened in Delhi last evening has deeply disturbed everyone. Our agencies will get to the very bottom of this conspiracy. The conspirators behind this will not be spared. All those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Delhi Police have registered a case under India’s main anti-terrorism law — the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) — along with the Explosives Act and other criminal provisions. Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia confirmed that the investigation is still in its early stages.
Authorities sealed off the blast site overnight, as forensic teams combed through debris, searching for evidence that could lead them to those responsible. The Red Fort metro station has been closed for security reasons, and nearby markets remain shuttered.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as a car exploded at a busy traffic signal around 7 p.m., leaving behind mangled vehicles and twisted metal. “It was like the ground shook,” said one shopkeeper from the old quarters.
Relatives of the victims waited anxiously outside Lok Nayak Hospital, hoping for news of their loved ones. “We just want to know if he’s safe,” said a woman searching for her cousin among the injured.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that all intelligence and security agencies are “working round the clock” and promised that findings will be made public soon.
