Israel Breaks Tradition: Netanyahu Announces Israel Prize for Former US President Donald Trump

Israel will honor former United States President Donald Trump with the nation’s highest civilian award in 2026, marking the first time in decades that the Israel Prize will go to someone who is not an Israeli citizen. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement following a warm meeting with Trump in Florida, saying the decision reflects the deep appreciation many Israelis feel for Trump’s support of the country.

Netanyahu noted that Trump has often challenged convention in global politics and suggested it was fitting for Israel to do the same. “We decided to break a convention too, or create a new one, and that is to award the Israel Prize,” he said. The prize has historically been awarded only to Israeli citizens or residents, with very rare exceptions for people recognized for outstanding contributions to the Jewish people. Only one other non-Israeli, Indian conductor Zubin Mehta, has previously received the distinction under that category, back in 1991.

The Israeli leader praised Trump for what he described as steadfast friendship and significant diplomatic efforts benefiting Israel, including negotiations that led to the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks. Netanyahu said the upcoming honor mirrors “overwhelming sentiment” within Israel, adding that many citizens value Trump’s role in supporting the nation’s security and shared fight against terrorism.

Trump responded with gratitude, calling the award “surprising and very much appreciated,” and hinted that he may travel to Israel to receive the prize at the ceremony traditionally held on the eve of Independence Day. For Trump, the recognition adds to a growing list of symbolic acknowledgments of his diplomatic activities, including the recently awarded Fifa Peace Prize.

While Trump has frequently positioned himself as a global peacemaker, claiming he helped prevent or end conflicts during his time in office, critics and fact-checkers have disputed several of those claims. Nonetheless, the Israel Prize announcement underscores his enduring influence on Israeli–US relations and the admiration he continues to receive from segments of the Israeli public.
