Starting this year, all Malaysian university students, whether in public or private institutions, will be required to study the Federal Constitution and Malaysian history, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced.

Currently, subjects like Bahasa Melayu and History are not compulsory at the tertiary level. However, under the revised National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026–2035, these general education courses will now be fully taught in Malay, ensuring that every student gains a foundational understanding of the nation’s history and constitutional framework.

“It is unreasonable for Malaysian students to lack any understanding of their country’s Constitution and history,” the Prime Minister said during the blueprint’s launch. “If we want to safeguard this nation, our children must master the basic knowledge of our Constitution and history.”

In a related development, Anwar highlighted plans to address student housing challenges. Starting this year, 5,000 additional student accommodation places will be made available, particularly in urban areas where complaints over limited and expensive housing have been rising.

To ensure effective implementation, the government has directed government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to take the lead in developing student housing in collaboration with universities. This approach aims to prioritize affordable student accommodation while reducing reliance on private developers.

“We hope to begin this year at selected universities, targeting 5,000 additional accommodation places,” Anwar said.

The new blueprint reflects a comprehensive approach to education policy in Malaysia, creating a seamless connection from school education to higher learning. The RPN is jointly led by the Ministry of Higher Education through the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint (RPTM) 2026–2035 and the Ministry of Education through the Malaysian Education Blueprint (RPM) 2026–2035.

This initiative not only strengthens national identity among students but also ensures that Malaysia’s future leaders are well-informed about the nation’s legal and historical foundations.
