A conflict that began on the battlefields of Ukraine has now raised concerns far beyond Eastern Europe after Iran accused Ukraine of carrying out an attack on one of its merchant vessels in the Caspian Sea.
According to Iranian officials, the strike caused a major explosion on the vessel, resulting in the death of one sailor and injuries to another crew member. Iran has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a hostile action and warning that it will not allow the attack to go unanswered.
The accusation came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces had conducted long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea targeting vessels allegedly connected to military cargo operations involving Iran and Russia.
Ukraine’s security services stated that drone operations had been carried out against cargo vessels under international sanctions, claiming these ships were being used to transport military-related supplies between Iran and Russia.
Iran, however, rejected any involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war and stated that it has maintained a neutral position throughout the conflict. Iranian officials said the attack represents a serious escalation and summoned Ukraine’s diplomatic representative in Tehran to formally protest what it described as a criminal act.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also called for international attention, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urging the European Union and the United Nations Security Council to take a strong position regarding the incident.
